Kunihiko Kodaira was a famous math expert from Japan. He was born in Tokyo. He studied math and physics at the University of Tokyo. During a war, he worked on secret codes. He also studied a hard math idea called Hodge theory.

In 1949, Kodaira moved to the United States. He worked at Princeton University. He was a professor there. He used new tools to study algebraic geometry. This is a way to study shapes using math. He also worked with Donald C. Spencer. Together, they made a new theory. This theory helps us see how shapes can change.

Kodaira also studied how to group different types of shapes. He found seven kinds of special two-dimensional shapes. His work was very important for other math experts. In 1954, he won the Fields Medal. He was the first person from Japan to win it. He also won the Wolf Prize later in life. He returned to the University of Tokyo in 1967. He died in 1997. His ideas still help math experts today.
