Math helps us find and study shapes.

We use math rules to do this. These rules are called polynomials. A polynomial is a type of math equation.

When we solve these equations, we find shapes. We call these shapes algebraic varieties.

Some shapes are simple. You might know a circle or a line. Other shapes are more complex. You might see a parabola or an ellipse.

These are all types of algebraic varieties.

This study is called algebraic geometry. It is a very important part of math. It connects to many other areas. It helps us understand numbers and space. Scientists use computers to study these shapes too. This is called computational algebraic geometry. It uses new software to solve hard puzzles. One famous math win used these ideas. A man named Andrew Wiles used them to solve a very old puzzle. It was called Fermat's Last Theorem.
