It is a song used to celebrate the New Year. The lyrics tell a story about a swallow. This small bird flies into a home to sing. The bird promises the family a plentiful and good year. Many people in Ukraine sing this to wish others well. It is a special way to share hope for the future.

The music uses a very special four-note pattern. This pattern is called an ostinato. An ostinato is a melody that repeats over and over. The song also uses a rhythm called hemiola. This means the musical accents switch back and forth. Some people think this music is prehistoric. It might be even older than Christianity. Long ago, people sang this to welcome the New Year in March. Later, the holiday moved to January.

A composer named Mykola Leontovych made the version we know. He was a teacher and a musician. He used old folk melodies to write his piece. He worked on this arrangement between 1901 and 1919. The song was first performed on December 29, 1916. This happened at the Kyiv Merchants' Assembly Hall.

Later, a group called the Ukrainian Republic Capella toured Europe. They performed over 1000 concerts to share Ukrainian music.

Many people know this tune as "Carol of the Bells." An American named Peter J. Wilhousky wrote these English words. He worked for NBC Radio. He thought the repeating notes sounded like ringing bells. He published his new lyrics in 1936. These English lyrics are different from the original Ukrainian ones. The two songs share the same melody but different stories. This version became very popular for Christmas in many countries.

Today, the song connects many different cultures. In Ukraine, it is still a New Year song. People sing it on January 13. In other places, it is a famous Christmas carol. You might even hear it in movies. It appeared in the film "Hunt for the Wilderpeople." It was also in a 2022 film called "Carol of the Bells." The song remains a symbol of peace and faith for many people.
