It tells a story about a small bird called a swallow. The bird flies into a home to sing. It tells the family they will have a good year.

The song uses a special four-note pattern. This pattern repeats over and over. People call this an ostinato. This music may be very old. It might even be older than the Christian faith. Long ago, people sang it to celebrate the New Year in March. Later, the New Year moved to January.

A composer named Mykola Leontovych wrote the version we know. He used old folk songs to make it. His choir toured many places to share this music.

In other lands, people know it as "Carol of the Bells." An American man named Peter Wilhousky wrote new words for it. His words are about ringing bells. The music sounds like bells to him. Even though the words are different, the tune is the same. In Ukraine, people still sing it for the New Year.
