Mason wanted people to sing together in large groups. He used music from famous European masters like Mozart. He published a successful book of songs called a hymnal. This book helped make church music very popular.

Some people had different views of his work. He liked European music styles. This led him to move away from older American singing styles. Some felt his new way of music changed local traditions. Still, he was a very big name in music history. The University of New York even gave him a doctor of music degree. This was the first music degree from an American college.
