He lived during the 1800s and did many different jobs. He was a banker, but he was most famous as a music director. Mason wrote over 1,600 hymn tunes for people to sing. Some of his most famous works include the music for "Joy to the World." He also wrote the tune Bethany for the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Even the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" has music written by him.

Mason had a very specific way of teaching music. He wanted to bring European classical music to America. He used tunes from famous composers like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. He even published a successful book of songs called a hymnal in 1822. At first, he did not put his name on the book. He was a banker and did not want to hurt his job. He later moved to Boston and became a leader in music there. He helped start the Boston Academy of Music in 1833.

His life began in Medfield, Massachusetts, in 1792.

By the age of 17, he was already a music director for a church. He later moved to Savannah, Georgia, to work in a store and a bank. In Savannah, he helped start the first Sunday school for Black children in America. He studied music with a teacher named Frederick L. Abel. In 1827, he moved to Boston to continue his banking career. Later, he served as the music superintendent for Boston schools from 1838 to 1841.

Mason achieved many great things during his long career. In 1855, the University of New York gave him a doctor of music degree. This was the very first musical degree given by an American college. He also helped the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church have great singing. He did this by focusing on the whole group singing together. He even traveled to Europe in 1852 to learn more. There, he saw how German churches sang with great energy. He brought those ideas back to help American churches.

Not everyone agreed with the way Mason changed music. Before his time, Americans had their own unique singing traditions. Some people used a style called shape note music. Mason and his brother, Timothy, thought this old style was not scientific. They wanted to replace old singing schools with new ones. Because of this, some older American music styles began to fade away. However, Mason is still remembered as a pioneer. His work helped make music a part of many public schools.
