He is known as the first great American choral composer. This means he wrote music specifically for groups of people to sing together. Most of his songs were written for a four-part chorus. These groups sang a cappella, which means they sang without any instruments to help them. His music could feel very strong and stirring. Some of his songs were happy or celebratory. He even wrote songs that were meant to be funny.

Billings had a very interesting way of working with music. He often wrote many songs in large books. Some of these books were called The New-England Psalm-Singer or The Continental Harmony. He would sometimes take an old song and make it better. He would write a new version and put it in his next book. He also wrote long introductions in his books. These notes explained the rules of music to his readers. He used these notes to teach people how to perform his songs correctly. He even suggested that men and women could sing certain parts together.

His life began in Boston, Massachusetts, a long time ago. He was born on October 7, 1746. When he was only 14 years old, his father died. This meant he had to stop his formal schooling. To help his family, he trained to be a tanner. A tanner is someone who works with leather. He mostly taught himself how to write music. He may have learned some things from a man named John Barry. Billings lived a long life filled with many different experiences.

Billings spent much of his time as a singing master. This was his job, and he was listed in the Boston city directory as one until 1798. He opened singing schools so people could learn to sing well. In 1769, he and John Barrey invited the public to join a school. He also taught a school in Stoughton, Massachusetts, in 1774. His music was very popular during his lifetime. However, he did not make much money from it. The laws for protecting music were not very strong back then. Other people could print his songs without paying him. This made his later years very difficult. He died in Boston on September 26, 1800.

Even though things were hard for him, his music never truly went away. His songs stayed popular in rural parts of New England. They even traveled to the South and West. His music became part of a special singing tradition called Sacred Harp. Today, many different kinds of people still sing his music. Modern composers like William Schuman have used his songs in their own works. Even dancers like Twyla Tharp have used his hymns for dance pieces. His music continues to connect people through the joy of singing.
