A priest named Joseph Mohr wrote the words in 1816. He lived in a place called Mariapfarr, Austria. Later, he went to the village of Oberndorf. On Christmas Eve in 1818, he asked a man named Franz Xaver Gruber for help. The church organ was broken because of river flooding. To fix this, Gruber wrote a new melody for the guitar to play. This allowed the music to be heard even without the big organ.

History shows how the song traveled from a small village to many countries.

An organ builder named Karl Mauracher loved the tune. He took the music home to a place called the Zillertal. Then, two families of singers called the Strassers and the Rainers performed it. The Rainers even sang it for leaders like Franz I of Austria. In 1839, the song reached New York City in the United States. By the 1840s, it was a favorite song for Frederick William IV of Prussia.

Many interesting facts surround the life of this song.
