Seth is a significant figure within the Abrahamic religious traditions. He is identified as the third son of Adam and Eve. In the Hebrew Bible, he is listed alongside his brothers Cain and Abel. Many traditions suggest Seth was born after the death of Abel. Because of this, Eve believed God provided Seth as a replacement for her lost son. This lineage makes him a vital link in many religious family trees.

Biblical accounts provide specific details regarding his life and family. The Book of Genesis records his birth during Adam's lifetime. Depending on the text used, Adam was either 130 or 230 years old at that time. Adam lived to be 930 years old and fathered other children as well. Seth himself is said to have lived for 912 years. He died 14 years before the birth of Noah. Some Jewish traditions use a different reckoning, placing his birth in 2130 BC.

Jewish traditions offer many stories about Seth's life and wisdom. The text known as the Life of Adam and Eve describes his journey with his mother. They traveled to the Garden of Eden to seek oil from the Tree of Mercy. During this trip, a wild beast attacked and bit Seth. He was able to command the beast to leave. Later, Seth was the only one to witness Adam being taken up in a divine chariot. It is also said that Adam shared secret teachings with Seth. These teachings are sometimes connected to the Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism.

Historical writers like Josephus provided further descriptions of Seth's legacy. Josephus described Seth as a man of virtuous and excellent character. He reported that Seth's descendants were very wise. They are said to have invented ways to study the heavenly bodies, such as astronomy. To protect this knowledge, they built two massive pillars. One pillar was made of brick and the other of stone. They hoped the stone pillar would survive a great destruction like a fire or a flood.

In the Christian tradition, Seth holds a place in sacred history. He is included in the genealogy of Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke. The Armenian Apostolic Church recognizes him as one of the Holy Forefathers. They celebrate a special feast day for him on July 26. There was also a Christian Gnostic group known as the Sethians. They viewed Seth as a divine incarnation. They believed the descendants of Seth were a superior group within human society.

Islam also holds Seth in high regard as a righteous figure. He is respected as a prophet who was a gift to Adam. The scholar ibn Kathir recorded that Seth transferred God's Law to mankind. Some Islamic sources suggest Seth received the very first scriptures. He is credited with teaching people about the prophecy of the Great Flood. He also provided inspiration for the methods of night prayer. Traditional crafts, such as making horn combs, are sometimes traced back to him.

Because of his importance, many locations claim to hold his tomb. In Lebanon, the village of Al-Nabi Shayth is named after the Prophet Seth. There is also a tradition placing his grave in the village of Bashshit. This site is now located in the Israeli moshav Aseret. Other traditions locate his burial site in Afghanistan or even in India. These diverse locations show how his story has spread across many different cultures.

Different belief systems connect Seth to their own unique origins. In Mandaeism, he is known as the angelic figure Shitil. He is viewed as a prophet who taught John the Baptist. The Yazidi tradition offers a different view of his beginning. They believe Adam and Eve placed their seeds into separate jars. In their oral literature, the seed from Adam produced Shehid ibn Jerr. This figure is considered the ancestor of the Yazidi people. These varied accounts demonstrate the deep impact of Seth across human history.
