Isaac is a central figure in several major world religions. He is one of the three patriarchs of the Israelites. A patriarch is a male head of a family or a tribe. He is highly significant in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, the Baháʼí Faith, and Rastafari.

His name is a transliteration of a word meaning "he will laugh" or "he laughs." This name reflects the reaction of his parents, Abraham and Sarah. When God promised them a child, they laughed in disbelief because of their advanced age.

The narrative of his life begins with a divine promise. God changed the names of Abram and Sarai to Abraham and Sarah. He promised that Abraham would father many nations through a son named Isaac. This son would be the basis of a new covenant. Because Sarah had been barren for a long time, she initially offered her bondservant, Hagar, to Abraham. However, the messengers of the Lord confirmed that Isaac would be born within one year.

Isaac was the firstborn of Sarah. On his eighth day, he was circumcised to comply with the Jewish covenant.

A major event in Isaac's youth is known as the Akedah, or the Binding.

According to the text, God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on an altar at Mount Moriah. This was described as the last of ten trials to test Abraham's faith. Abraham prepared the sacrifice and bound his son. At the last moment, an angel prevented the act. Abraham then sacrificed a ram found in the thickets instead. Some Jewish interpretations suggest Isaac died and was later revived. Other traditions claim his eyes became blind because of the tears of angels present during the event.

Isaac's adulthood involved establishing his own family and territory. Before he turned 40, Abraham sent his steward, Eliezer, to Mesopotamia to find a wife. Eliezer chose Rebekah, an Aramean woman. Isaac prayed for Rebekah after many years of her being barren. When she finally conceived, she gave birth to twins named Esau and Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old at the time of their birth.

He favored Esau, while Rebekah favored Jacob. This created a complex dynamic within the family.

Isaac also managed the lands and resources of his father. When famine occurred, he moved to Gerar in the land of the Philistines. There, he encountered King Abimelech. To protect himself, Isaac told people that Rebekah was his sister. He also worked to restore his father's legacy by unearthing old wells. The Philistines had previously stopped these wells with earth. Isaac dug new wells all the way to Beersheba. He eventually made a pact with Abimelech, similar to the one Abraham had made.

In his later years, Isaac faced challenges regarding his inheritance. He became blind and called for Esau to hunt venison for him. While Esau was away, Jacob followed his mother's advice to deceive his father. Jacob misrepresented himself as Esau to receive the blessing. This happened after Esau had already sold his birthright to Jacob for lentil stew. Consequently, Jacob became the primary heir.

After Isaac died at age 180, Jacob and Esau buried him in Hebra. Local tradition places his grave in the Cave of the Patriarchs.

Different religious traditions offer unique perspectives on his significance. In Islam, Isaac is called Ishaq and is viewed as a righteous prophet. The Quran mentions him seventeen times, often alongside Abraham and Jacob. In Christianity, Isaac is often seen as a "type" or symbol of Jesus. For example, the writer Paul contrasted Isaac with Ishmael to discuss different covenants. Some early thinkers compared Isaac carrying wood for a sacrifice to Jesus carrying a cross. In Judaism, he is honored for his role in prayer and his steadfastness in the Land of Israel.
