Esau is a significant figure in religious history and ancient tradition.

He is the firstborn twin son of Isaac and Rebecca. His parents were the children of Abraham and Sarah. In the Hebrew Bible, Esau appears in the Book of Genesis. He is also mentioned by the prophets Obadiah and Malachi. The Christian New Testament references him in the Epistles to the Romans and to the Hebrews. His story serves to explain the historical relationship between the nations of Israel and Edom.

The mechanism of Esau's identity is tied to his physical appearance and his actions. He was described as being red and covered in hair like a garment. This physical trait is linked to his name and the name Edom, which both mean "red." Esau was a "man of the field" who worked as a hunter. This lifestyle distinguished him from his brother, Jacob. Jacob was described as a plain or simple man. This contrast in character and appearance defines much of their early interaction.

There are several distinct parts to the narrative of Esau's life. The first part is the loss of his birthright. A birthright is the authority and inheritance given to a firstborn son. Esau was famished after hunting and traded this right for a bowl of red lentil pottage. The second part involves the loss of his paternal blessing. Jacob, encouraged by Rebekah, used a disguise of goat skin to trick the blind Isaac.

Jacob successfully received the blessing intended for Esau. This led to a period of intense conflict between the brothers.

History shows that the tension between the twins had long-lasting consequences. After the deception, Esau vowed to kill Jacob. To survive, Jacob fled to Paddan-aram to work for his uncle, Laban. Jacob worked for seven years to marry Rachel, but was deceived by Laban. He then worked another seven years to complete his marriage. Eventually, the brothers met again.

Esau showed forgiveness by accepting gifts from the now-wealthy Jacob. This reconciliation is a key moment in their shared history.

The significance of Esau extends to the lineage of entire nations. He is the progenitor, or founding ancestor, of the Edomites in Mount Seir. Some views suggest he is also the ancestor of the Kenizzites and the Amalekites. The Edomites were an ancient enemy of Israel. The prophet Obadiah describes the violence done by the Edomites against Jacob. Some traditions claim the Edomites participated in the destruction of Solomon's Temple in 587 BCE.

These historical connections link Esau to major geopolitical shifts in the ancient Near East.

Esau's family structure is detailed through various names and marriages. He married two Canaanite women named Judith and Basemath. He also had a cousin named Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael. These unions were noted as causing grief to his parents. Esau had five recorded sons: Eliphaz, Jeush, Jaalam, Korah, and Reuel. In Islamic tradition, the prophet Ayyub is considered a great-grandson of Esau's son Reuel. This connects Esau to a wide web of religious figures and lineages.

Different belief systems offer unique perspectives on Esau's character. In the Muslim tradition, Esau is part of the story of the prophet Ya'qub. Some accounts state that Esau was the favorite son of Isaac. Jewish commentaries often present a more critical view of Esau. The Talmud suggests he sold his birthright at the age of fifteen. Some midrashic stories describe his temperament during his mother's pregnancy. These varied interpretations show how much influence his story holds across different cultures and faiths.
