Rebecca is a central figure in the Hebrew Bible. She was the wife of Isaac and the mother of the twins Esau and Jacob. Many scholars debate her historicity, which means they are unsure if she was a real person in history. However, she remains a vital figure in religious tradition. Some traditions suggest she is buried in the Cave of the Patriarchs. This sacred site also holds the remains of Abraham and Sarah, as well as Jacob and Leah.

Her story begins with a search for a wife for Isaac. Abraham wanted Isaac to marry a woman from his own family. He sent his servant, often identified as Eliezer of Damascus, to Aram-Naharaim. This region is also called Paddan Aram. The servant carried expensive jewelry, clothing, and dainties as gifts. He devised a specific test to find the right woman. He prayed that the maiden who offered him water and also watered his ten camels would be the chosen bride.

Rebecca fulfilled this test immediately. She drew water for the servant and for all his camels. This act proved her kind and generous nature. The servant gave her a golden necklace or nose ring and two golden bracelets. Her brother Laban and her father Bethuel, an Aramean, agreed she could marry Isaac. After a period of hosting, Rebecca chose to leave with the servant immediately. Her family blessed her, wishing that her offspring would inherit the gate of its foes.

When Rebecca arrived at Abraham's home, she saw Isaac praying in the fields of Beer-lahai-roi. This moment is significant in the Talmud, which notes Isaac was instituting the Mincha, or afternoon prayer. Upon seeing his spiritual character, Rebecca modestly covered herself with a veil. They were married in the tent of Isaac's mother, Sarah. Some traditions say that three miracles associated with Sarah reappeared when Rebecca entered the tent. These included a lamp that burned from Shabbat to Shabbat, blessed dough, and a hovering cloud.

Marriage and motherhood were central to Rebecca's life. Isaac was 37 years old when he married. While some commentators like Rashi suggest Rebecca was only 3 years old, others like Hezekiah ben Manoah calculate she was 14. The couple waited twenty years before having children. During this time, they prayed fervently to God. When Rebecca finally conceived, she experienced great discomfort. She sought enlightenment at the yeshiva of Shem and Eber to understand her struggle. There, she received a prophecy that twins were fighting in her womb. The prophecy stated that the older son would serve the younger.

At the birth, the first child was red and hairy. He was named Esau, which can mean "rough" or "completely developed." The second child grabbed his brother's heel. He was named Jacob, meaning "heel-catcher" or "supplanter." As they grew, the brothers showed opposing natures. Esau became a hunter and a man of the field. Jacob was a wholesome man who stayed in the tents. This difference in character led to a conflict over the birthright. Esau traded his right as the firstborn to Jacob for a bowl of red lentil stew.

Later in life, Rebecca played a major role in a family deception. As Isaac grew old and blind, he intended to give his blessing to Esau. Rebecca, remembering the prophecy, decided to help Jacob receive the blessing instead. She instructed Jacob to wear Esau's clothes and used goatskins to make his arms feel hairy. When Jacob approached his father, Isaac was confused. He famously remarked, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau!" This event shaped the future of the family lineage and the nations that would descend from the twins.
