Sesame Street is a landmark American educational television series.

It uses a unique blend of live-action, animation, and puppetry. The show is famous for its use of Jim Henson's Muppets.

Beyond entertainment, the series was designed with specific educational goals. It was the first children's show to use a formal curriculum to shape its content. It was also the first show to have its educational effects formally studied. This approach helped transform how television could be used for learning.

The production relies on a collaborative system known as the CTW model. This model was developed by the Children's Television Workshop. It involves a constant cycle of planning, production, and evaluation. Producers, writers, and educators work alongside researchers to create content. This research ensures that the show's segments effectively teach children. The goal is to master the addictive qualities of television to do good. By holding a child's attention, the creators can deliver important lessons.

The show's format has evolved through several distinct stages. Initially, it used a fast-paced structure to maintain interest. Episodes featured individual segments like puppet sketches and animated cartoons. These were interrupted by "inserts" to keep the pace moving. Early on, producers feared that human actors and Muppets should not interact. They worried this might confuse young viewers. However, research showed that children loved seeing them together. Consequently, characters like Big Bird began interacting with the human cast. Later, the show moved toward a narrative-focused format. This allowed for ongoing storylines rather than just isolated segments. In 1998, the popular "Elmo's World" segment was added to the mix.

The history of the series began with a vision in 1966. Television producer Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett conceived the idea.

They wanted to help preschoolers prepare for school. To fund this ambitious project, they secured $8 million in grants. These funds came from the U.S. federal government and several foundations. The show officially premiered on November 10, 1969.

The name "Sesame Street" was inspired by the phrase "open sesame." This name suggests a doorway to a world of excitement.

Sesame Street has achieved massive global significance. By its 40th anniversary in 2009, it aired in over 140 countries. In 2001, international versions reached more than 120 million viewers. The show's impact in the United States is also immense. A 1996 survey showed that 95% of American preschoolers had watched it. By 2018, an estimated 86 million Americans had watched the show as children. The series has also been highly decorated. As of 2022, it has won 222 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards. This is a higher number of awards than any other children's show.

Throughout its long run, the show has addressed many different topics. While it began with basics like the alphabet and numbers, it expanded. The curriculum now includes affective topics like emotions and ethics. Some storylines have been inspired by real life events. For example, the show addressed the 1982 death of actor Will Lee. He played the character Mr. Hooper. The show also celebrated life through the 1988 marriage of characters Luis and Maria.

The series has also navigated major shifts in media distribution. For decades, it aired on PBS. In 2015, a deal brought first-run episodes to HBO. This allowed the show to produce more episodes each season. Later, the content moved to HBO Max and Max. In May 2025, a new agreement brought the show to Netflix.
