Sesame Street is a famous American television series made for young children.

It combines many different styles like live-action, animation, and puppetry. The show uses Jim Henson's Muppets to bring characters to life. It is much more than just a fun show to watch. It was the first children's program to use a specific curriculum. This means the show was designed with clear learning goals in mind. The creators wanted to use the power of television to help kids.

They believed that if they could hold a child's attention, they could teach them.

The way the show works is very special and scientific. Producers, writers, and educators work together to plan every episode. They use a system called the CTW model to check their progress. This model relies on research to see what children actually learn. At first, the show used short segments to keep kids interested. These segments taught things like the alphabet, numbers, and shapes.

Later, the show moved toward longer stories with ongoing plots. This change helped children learn how to follow a narrative. They even added segments like Elmo's World to keep things engaging.

The idea for the show began back in 1966. Two people, Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, had a big dream.

They wanted to help preschoolers get ready for school. They received $8 million in grants to make this happen. This money came from the government and several private foundations. The show officially premiered on November 10, 1969.

The name came from the phrase "open sesame." This name suggests a place where exciting things happen.

Sesame Street has reached people all over the entire world. By 2009, it was being broadcast in more than 140 countries.

In 2001, over 120 million people watched various international versions. The show has won a huge number of awards. It has earned 222 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards. This is more than any other children's show in history. By 2022, it was estimated that 86 million Americans watched it as children. It remains one of the longest-running shows in the world.

Today, the show continues to change with the times. It has moved between different places like PBS, HBO, and Max.

In November 2025, new episodes began airing on Netflix. The show also uses YouTube to share its many stories. Its YouTube channel has more than 24 million subscribers. Even as technology changes, the goal stays the same. The creators want to reach as many children as possible. They want to help new generations learn and grow through play.
