She is best known as a founder of Sesame Workshop. This organization created the famous show Sesame Street. Cooney wanted to use television in a constructive way. She believed media could help people make a difference. Her work helped change how children learn through a screen. She was also one of the first female executives in American television.

Her path to success started with a big idea. In 1966, Cooney hosted a small dinner party at her apartment. Her husband, Tim Cooney, and her boss, Lewis Freedman, were there. They also met Lloyd Morrisett from the Carnegie Corporation. During the party, they discussed using television to teach young children. This conversation started a long professional relationship. It led to a plan for a brand new kind of program.

To make the show work, Cooney did a lot of research. In 1967, she took a leave from her job to study. She traveled across the United States and Canada. She interviewed many experts in education and child development. After her travels, she wrote a fifty-five-page report. This report was called "The Potential Uses of Television in Preschool Education." It served as a map for what Sesame Street would eventually become.

Cooney's career was full of many important steps and dates. She was born on November 30, 1929, in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1951. Later, she worked as a producer for WNET in New York City. She won several local Emmy awards for her documentary work. She helped raise $8 million to start Sesame Street. She served as the executive director of CTW until 1990.

Many things in her life helped her reach her goals. Her early studies in education gave her great credibility. Her time as a journalist helped her research big topics. She even used her skills to make documentaries about poverty. Even though she did not start as an expert in kids' TV, she led the way. In 2007, Sesame Workshop even named a center after her. Her legacy lives on through the many children who learn from her work.
