James Maury Henson was a highly influential American puppeteer, actor, and director.

He is most famous for creating the Muppets, a group of characters that brought joy to audiences globally. Henson was also a creative producer and animator. He created the television series Fraggle Rock and directed films like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. His work changed how people perceived puppetry on screen. He believed that puppets needed to possess "life and sensitivity" to truly connect with viewers.

Henson revolutionized puppetry by changing how characters were built and filmed. Most traditional puppets were made of stiff wood, which limited their movement. Henson instead used soft, flexible materials like foam rubber. This allowed for much greater control over the puppet's mouth. He could synchronize the mouth movements precisely with dialogue or music. This technique enabled a wider range of emotional expression. His very first version of Kermit the Frog was quite simple. It was made from a halved table tennis ball and fabric from his mother's old coat.

Beyond the construction of the puppets, Henson changed the visual style of television puppetry. Before him, cameras usually pointed at a stationary puppet theater, known as a proscenium. Henson used the camera and lens to engage dynamically with his characters. He wanted the viewer to feel part of the world. He also relied on a strong creative team to build his characters' personalities. He hired writer Jerry Juhl and performer Frank Oz to help develop the Muppets' humor. Henson and Oz formed a famous performing partnership. Together, they brought characters like Bert and Ernie and Kermit and Miss Piggy to life.

Henson's career began with small steps in the 1950s. He was born on September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi. He grew up in Mississippi and Maryland. While a student at the University of Maryland, he created Sam and Friends. This was a short-form comedy program on WRC-TV. The show featured early versions of his famous characters. In 1958, Henson and his wife, Jane Nebel, co-founded Muppets, Inc. This company later became The Jim Henson Company. Henson graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in home economics in 1960.

During the 1960s, Henson used his puppets for many different types of media. He appeared on many famous variety shows, such as The Ed Sullivan Show. He also created a series of very popular commercials for Wilkins Coffee. These ads featured two characters named Wilkins and Wontkins. Most commercials used a "hard sell" approach, but Henson preferred to make people laugh. The Wilkins and Wontkins characters were so successful that over 300 commercials were made. They were used to promote many different products, including breads, beverages, and even oil.

Henson's impact reached far into the worlds of children's education and film. In 1969, he joined the cast of Sesame Street. He helped develop many of the Muppet characters used on the program. He also produced The Muppet Show between 1976 and 1981. Henson's work earned him significant professional recognition. He won two Emmy Awards for his work on The Storyteller and The Jim Henson Hour.

His experimental film, Time Piece, was even nominated for an Academy Award in 1965.

Jim Henson passed away in New York City on May 16, 1990. He died from toxic shock syndrome caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. At the time, he was negotiating to sell his company to The Walt Disney Company, but the deal was not completed. His legacy, however, remains very strong. In 1991, he was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2011, he was named a Disney Legend. His work continues to influence how creators use technology and puppetry to tell stories.
