They also use a burlesque and self-referential style. This means the characters often acknowledge they are in a show.

The Muppets are a massive media franchise. This franchise includes many films, television shows, and music. They have become a staple of popular culture in the United States. They are also well-known in English-speaking areas around the world.

Creating Muppet performances involves specific creative methods. Jim Henson, the creator, changed how puppets appeared on television. In his first series, Sam and Friends, he avoided using a proscenium arch. A proscenium arch is the frame around a stage. Instead, he used the natural framing of the television set. This allowed the characters to feel more direct to the viewer.

Later, the Muppets became famous for the variety-sketch format. This format features many short, different acts in one program. They might perform a musical number or a funny skit.

The Muppets have gone through several distinct stages of development. They began in the 1950s with short-form television. In the 1960s, characters like Kermit and Rowlf appeared on talk shows.

During the late 1960s and 1970s, they moved into educational television. This was most notable through their work on Sesame Street. In the mid-1970s, they transitioned into adult-oriented sketch comedy. This led to the creation of The Muppet Show. Finally, the characters moved into theatrical films and animated series. This diversification allowed them to reach many different types of audiences.

The history of the Muppets began in 1955. Jim Henson produced the series Sam and Friends for WRC-TV. Kermit the Frog was one of his earliest and most famous creations. In 1969, the Muppets joined the educational program Sesame Street. Henson waived his performance fee to keep ownership of the characters. This helped make Sesame Street a huge success. In 1976, The Muppet Show debuted through a partnership with British producer Lew Grade. This show became a flagship for the franchise. It ran for five years and earned international fame.

The significance of the Muppets is shown through awards and business deals. The Muppet Show was nominated for 21 Primetime Emmy Awards. It won four of those awards, including Outstanding Variety Series in 1978. Their films have also been successful, receiving four Academy Award nominations. In 1989, Disney began negotiating to buy the Jim Henson Company. While Henson passed away in 1990 before the deal finished, Disney eventually acquired the Muppets. In February 2004, Disney bought the intellectual property for $75 million. This deal included most film and television libraries.

The franchise also includes theatrical films like The Muppet Movie from 1979. Other films include The Great Muppet Caper and The Muppets Take Manhattan. They also created characters for the series Fraggle Rock in 1983. Even in the digital age, they remain relevant. A YouTube cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by the Muppets went viral. It reached 90 million views and won two Webby Awards.

The Muppets connect to many different areas of the entertainment industry. They bridge the gap between children's programming and adult comedy. They also connect to the world of theme parks. Disney manages the characters through the Muppets Studio. This includes attractions like Muppet*Vision 3D.
