Sergei Anatolyevich Starostin was a Russian linguist. A linguist is someone who studies language. He was a historical linguist and a philologist. This means he looked at how languages change. He wanted to find connections between different groups. He tried to rebuild ancient ways of speaking. These are called proto-languages. He worked to find out how people spoke long ago.

Starostin had many big ideas about language families. He worked on the Dené–Caucasian hypothesis. This idea linked several language groups together. These groups included Northwest Caucasian and Sino-Tibetan. He also suggested a group called Borean languages. He thought Borean was a very old family. He linked this to the Austric and Nostratic families. Most experts today do not accept these large ideas. They often see his theories as unlikely.

He spent many years building tools for his work. In 1985, he began making a system called STARLING. This was a database to manage his information. He worked with a man named Murray Gell-Mann. Starostin also helped reconstruct many specific languages. He worked on Proto-Kiranti and Proto-Tibeto-Burman. He also looked at Proto-Yeniseian and Proto-Altaic. His work involved a lot of careful study.

Starostin was a very busy professor. He taught at the Russian State University for the Humanities. He was also a visiting professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He often gave guest lectures at Leiden University. This school is in the Netherlands. In June 2005, he received a special degree there. It was called a doctor honoris causa. He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Sergei Starostin died in Moscow on September 30, 2005. He died from a heart attack. This happened after he finished a lecture. His work left a big mark on his field. His son, Georgiy Starostin, is also a linguist. Georgiy continues the study of words today. They even helped build a large database called The Tower of Babel.
