Sergei Starostin was a man who studied words. He was a historical linguist. This means he looked at how languages change over time. He wanted to find links between many different languages.

Sergei had many big ideas. He thought some languages belonged to large families. He worked on a theory called Dené–Caucasian. This idea linked many different language groups together. He also spoke about a group called Borean. He thought these were very old languages from the north. Many other experts did not agree with his ideas. They thought his theories were not likely to be true.

Sergei used tools to help his work. He made a computer system called STARLING. This helped him manage his data. He worked with a man named Murray Gell-Mann. Sergei was a teacher at a school in Russia. He also gave talks at schools in the Netherlands. In 2005, he received an honorary degree.

Sergei died of a heart attack in Moscow. This happened after he gave a lecture. His son, Georgiy, is also a linguist. He continues to study words today.
