He is recognized globally for his technical precision and expressive movement. Polunin has achieved significant status within the classical dance world. He has worked as a freelance principal dancer at many prestigious venues. These include the Royal Opera House and the Bolshoi Theatre. His career is defined by both rapid professional ascent and a move toward independent artistic creation. He seeks to combine various creative disciplines through his own specialized projects.

Polunin’s path to professional ballet involved several distinct developmental stages. He began his physical training in a gymnastics academy from ages four to eight. At age eight, he transitioned to ballet training. He spent four years studying at the Kyiv State Choreographic Institute in the Ukrainian SSR. In 2003, at age thirteen, he moved to the United Kingdom. He joined the British Royal Ballet School through sponsorship from the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation. This transition allowed him to refine the steely technique noted by critics. He eventually rose to become a first soloist at the Royal Ballet in 2009.

His professional progression reached a historic milestone in June 2010. At only 20 years old, Polunin became the youngest male principal dancer in the history of the Royal Ballet. A principal dancer is the highest rank in a ballet company. He performed notable roles, such as the Knave in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. However, he resigned from the company on January 24, 2012. He stated that he felt his artistic identity was dying within the company structure. This decision led him to pursue a freelance career as a guest artist. He began performing at venues like La Scala Theatre and the Bayerisches Staatsballet.

Polunin has also focused on the creation of new works through Project Polunin. He reincorporated this group as Polunin Ink in 2018. The project aims to merge different artistic backgrounds into single productions. It brings together contemporary artists, musicians, and choreographers for stage and film. In 2019, the company premiered three distinct productions. These included the dance-drama Rasputin and the work Little Red and the Wolf. He also performed Romeo in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Verona Arena. This specific performance was seen by an audience of over 10,000 people.

His career includes several significant international awards and honors. In 2006, he won both the Prix de Lausanne and the Youth America Grand Prix. He was named the Young British Dancer of the Year in 2007. The Critics' Circle National Dance Awards recognized him as Best Male Dancer in 2010. He was also named Best Classical Male Dancer in 2011. In 2019, the Danza & Danza Awards named him Personality of the Year. More recently, in 2023, he received the Prize of the President of the Russian Federation for Young Cultural Figures.

Polunin has engaged in unique cultural exchanges that bridge different traditions. In September 2019, he performed at the Ninna-ji Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. This event was titled the "Encounter of the East and the West." To honor the theme, he wore a custom kimono designed by Kamida Kazumak. The garment featured calligraphy of the Heart Sutra by Tomoko Kawao. This performance was broadcast to a national audience in Japan. Such moments demonstrate his ability to use ballet as a tool for cross-cultural communication.

Beyond the stage, Polunin has expanded into the field of cinema. He made his feature film debut in the 2017 film Murder on the Orient Express. He also appeared in the 2018 film Red Sparrow. In the same year, he played Yuri Soloviev in the biopic The White Crow. His life and training were also the subject of a 2016 documentary titled Dancer. This film, directed by Steven Cantor, examines his rise to international fame. These various roles show how his training in movement translates into different media.
