A prima ballerina is a leading female dancer in a ballet company. Some publications even call her a prima ballerina assoluta. This title suggests a level of excellence that goes beyond a standard lead role. Ferri has spent decades performing complex stories through the art of classical dance. Her career spans many of the world's most famous ballet companies and stages.

To reach this level of mastery, Ferri underwent intense training. She began her studies at the La Scala Theatre Ballet School in Milan, Italy. She later transferred to the upper school of the Royal Ballet School. In 1980, she competed in the Prix de Lausanne. She won a scholarship there, which allowed her to continue her professional education. This early foundation provided the technical skill needed for a global career.

Ferri's professional journey began with the Royal Ballet in 1980. She quickly gained recognition for her talent. In 1982, she received a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding First Achievement of the Year in Ballet. This was for her role in the ballet Mayerling. The following year, she won a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Valley of Shadows. By 1983, she had earned the prestigious rank of Principal Dancer.

In 1985, a major change occurred in her career. Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was then the director of the American Ballet Theatre, requested that she join his company. Ferri moved to the United States to become a Principal Dancer there. She stated that she sought the more rigorous training program that the American Ballet Theatre could provide. This move helped her refine her craft even further. During this era, she also appeared in the 1987 film Dancers alongside Baryshnikov.

Ferri later built a deep connection with the La Scala Theatre Ballet. In 1992, she became a Guest Star for the American Ballet Theatre while also collaborating closely with La Scala. It was during this time that she was recognized as the Prima Ballerina Assoluta of that company.

Her ability to perform in different styles made her a sought-after international guest artist. She performed with many elite groups, including the Paris Opera Ballet and the Kirov Ballet.

Her career includes many famous roles and partnerships. She is well known for her performances in story ballets. These were choreographed by artists like Kenneth MacMillan and Roland Petit. One of her most iconic roles was Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. In 2007, she performed this role opposite Roberto Bolle. This performance served as her farewell to the stage at age 44. Her two daughters, Matilde and Emma, joined her on stage for this special moment.

Although she retired in 2007, Ferri's passion for dance led to a second act. She returned to the stage in 2013, starring in The Piano Upstairs at the Spoleto Festival. Since then, she has performed in several new works. These include Woolf Works, choreographed by Wayne McGregor. She has performed this piece with the Royal Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre in 2023 and 2024. Her return shows the lasting impact of her artistry.

Throughout her life, Ferri has worked with many legendary male dancers. These include Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. She has also danced with many others, such as Ethan Stiefel and Carlos Acosta. She has even noted that Julio Bocca was her favorite partner.
