She is celebrated for her unique vocal timbre, which refers to the specific quality or color of a sound. Critics have described her voice as having a sumptuous lower register. They also note the vibrancy of her middle range and the limpid, powerful quality of her high notes. This versatility allows her to perform a wide variety of musical styles.

Bartoli's musical career involves several different types of performances. She is a major star in the world of opera, where she sings complex roles in large productions. She also performs in recitals, which are concerts focused on solo singing. These recitals can feature a piano or a full orchestra.

Additionally, she works with Baroque ensembles, which are groups that specialize in music from the 1600s and 1700s. She has even produced music videos that use historical accuracy in wardrobe and cinematography to bring old music to life.

Her professional repertoire spans many musical eras and composers. She is widely known for her renditions of music by Rossini and Mozart. She also performs works by Handel, Vivaldi, Bellini, and Haydn. Bartoli has a deep interest in the Baroque period, which is a style of music from the 17th and early 18th centuries. She has specifically focused on the bel canto style. Bel canto is an Italian vocal style from the early 19th century that emphasizes beautiful, smooth singing. She even produced a project called "Mission" to highlight the works of Agostino Steffani, a lesser-known Baroque composer.

Bartoli's journey began in Rome, where she was born to professional singers Silvana Bazzoni and Pietro Angelo Bartoli. Her parents served as her first music teachers. She made her first public performance at age nine, playing a shepherd boy in the opera *Tosca*. She later received formal training at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome. At age 19, she appeared on the Italian television show *Fantastico*. Although she did not win the competition, the appearance led to an invitation to sing with the Paris Opera.

Her rise to international fame was marked by several significant debuts. She made her professional opera debut in 1987 at the Arena di Verona. In 1988, she performed the role of Rosina in *The Barber of Seville* at the Cologne Opera and the Zurich Opera. This role helped earn her critical acclaim. She later debuted at the Opéra Bastille in 1990 and at La Scala in 1991. Her performance at La Scala solidified her reputation as a leading singer of Rossini's music. She eventually performed at major venues like the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London.

Beyond singing, Bartoli has moved into significant leadership roles in the arts. In 2012, she became the artistic director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. She changed the programming to focus on beautiful programs and great artists. This decision led to record ticket sales and increased the festival's international importance. In December 2019, it was announced that she would lead the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. She officially began this role on January 1, 2023. She holds the distinction of being the first woman to serve as the director of that opera house.

Throughout her career, Bartoli has received many prestigious honors and awards. She was appointed a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995. In 2003, she won a Brit Award for her outstanding contribution to music. She has won five Grammy Awards, including one for Best Classical Vocal Performance for her album *Sacrificium*. She was also voted into the *Gramophone* Hall of Fame in 2012. These honors reflect her massive impact on the global classical music community.
