She is often described as the first diva in the history of the genre. In this context, a diva refers to a highly respected star. Renzi was famous for more than just her vocal talent. She was widely recognized for her exceptional acting abilities. This combination of singing and dramatic expression set a new standard for performers. Her influence helped shape how opera was performed and perceived during the 17th century.

Renzi's vocal range was quite wide for her time. Her voice spanned from middle C to high B-flat. Composers specifically wrote music to utilize this full range. They often included strong dramatic, emotional, and stylistic contrasts in their scores. These musical shifts were designed to showcase her uncanny command of vocal expression. The music required her to navigate complex technical demands while maintaining a deep emotional connection to the story. This ability allowed her to master various musical styles within a single performance.

Acting was the core of Renzi's unique stage presence. A contemporary writer named Strozzi described how she used her entire body to convey meaning. She governed her performances through precise movements of the body, gestures, and facial expressions. Her voice would rise and fall to match the intensity of a scene. She could shift from being enraged to becoming calm in an instant. She also controlled her tempo, speaking hurriedly at times and slowly at others. Strozzi noted that her expressions seemed so lifelike that they appeared born in the moment rather than memorized.

Many of the roles written for Renzi involved complex character transformations. Most of the thirteen leading roles she performed featured violent juxtapositions of comic and tragic moods. These characters often used disguises to navigate their stories. For example, in the opera La Deidamia, a lamenting princess disguises herself as a charming youth. In Argiope, L'Eupatra, and Le fortune di Rodope e Damira, a princess or queen disguises herself as an ingenuous shepherdess. Other roles utilized forms of deceit such as feigned madness, feigned piety, or feigned amorousness.

Renzi's career began in Rome and moved through many major European centers. She made her debut in 1640 at the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi. In this performance, she played Lucinda in Il favorito del principe. In 1641, she made a sensational debut in Venice as Deidamia in La finta pazza. This production inaugurated the Teatro Novissimo, which featured sets by the designer Giacomo Torelli. By the mid-1640s, she was considered the most celebrated and highest-paid singer of her era. Her fame was documented in collections like Le glorie della signora Anna Renzi, which celebrated her achievements.

Throughout the 1640s and 1650s, Renzi traveled extensively to perform for diverse audiences. She sang at the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo and in Florence in 1650. She also performed in Genoa in 1653. In 1654, she sang at the court theatre in Innsbruck. One notable performance occurred in 1655 in Innsbruck during an opera commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Charles. This production, L'Argia, celebrated the conversion of Queen Christina of Sweden. The Queen was reportedly very pleased with Renzi's performance. Renzi eventually bid farewell to the stage in 1657 at the Teatro Sant'Apollinare.

Renzi's legacy is tied to the development of opera as a dramatic medium. She helped move the art form beyond simple singing toward integrated musical drama. By mastering both the technical aspects of the voice and the physical requirements of acting, she embodied the complexities of human emotion. Her ability to switch between the comic gaiety of Thalia and the tragic majesty of Melpomene made her a true pioneer. She proved that an opera singer could be a complete dramatic artist, influencing how future generations would approach the stage.
