The September equinox is a special moment in our year.

It happens when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator. This is an imaginary line in the sky. The Sun moves southward during this time. This event can happen between September 21 and September 24. This happens because the calendar year is not the same as a tropical year. Scientists use this point to measure how long a tropical year lasts.

This event changes how we see the Sun rise and set. At the equinox, the Sun rises exactly in the east. It also sets exactly in the west. This is different from other times of the year. Before this, the Sun rises and sets more to the north. After this, it rises and sets more to the south. If you are at the North or South Poles, the Sun moves almost horizontally. It moves a little less than 0.39 degrees per day in its height.

The seasons change when the equinox arrives. In the Northern Hemisphere, astronomical summer ends and autumn begins. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons work the opposite way. Winter ends there and astronomical spring begins. This spring start is called the vernal equinox. The Sun's path moves south for six months. This movement starts at the June solstice.

This point in the sky has a special name. It is called the First Point of Libra. However, the stars seem to move over long periods. This is called the precession of the equinoxes. Because of this, the point is not in Libra anymore. It is now in the constellation Virgo. The Sun moved from Libra into Virgo in the year -729. It will move into the constellation Leo in the year 2439.

Many people around the world celebrate this time. In Japan, Autumnal Equinox Day is a public holiday. In Korea, people celebrate a harvest festival called Chuseok. In Iran, the equinox marks the start of the month of Mehr. This is part of a festival called Jashne Mehregan. In France, the equinox was the first day of a new calendar from 1793 to 1805. In Illinois, people visit Cahokia Woodhenge to watch the sunrise. They stand where ancient people once gathered.
