Virgo is a huge group of stars in the night sky.

It is the second-largest constellation overall. However, it is the largest one in the zodiac. The zodiac is a path in the sky that the Sun follows. The name Virgo means "maiden" in the Latin language. This group of stars sits between Leo and Libra. You can see it in the spring sky if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. It stays visible all night during March and April.

Finding Virgo is easy if you know where to look. You can find it by looking for the bright star Spica. The name Spica means "grain headed" in Latin. To find it, follow the curve of the Big Dipper. Keep going along that curve to the star Arcturus. Then, continue along the same curve to reach Spica.

Virgo is so big that the Sun takes 44 days to pass through it. This is a longer time than any other zodiac constellation. From 1990 until 2062, the Sun will be in Virgo from September 16 to October 30.

People have told stories about these stars for a very long time.

In ancient Babylon, part of Virgo was called "The Furrow." This represented a goddess and an ear of grain. Later, Greek stories linked Virgo to Demeter, the goddess of wheat. Some myths say Virgo is Erigone, the daughter of Icarius. Others say it is the goddess of justice, Dike. In the Middle Ages, some people even thought it looked like the Virgin Mary. In Hindu astrology, the sign is called Kanya and is ruled by Mercury.

Virgo is also a very busy place for space science.

It is full of many far-away galaxies. One is the Sombrero Galaxy, which looks like a wide hat. There is also a famous galaxy called M87. This galaxy is part of the Virgo Cluster. M87 has a supermassive black hole at its center. On April 10, 2019, scientists released the first direct image of a black hole's shadow. This black hole is at least 7.2 billion times heavier than our Sun.

Many other amazing things live in this part of space too. There are 35 verified exoplanets orbiting 29 different stars in Virgo. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. For example, the star Chi Virginis has a very massive planet. This planet is 11.1 times the mass of Jupiter. The star 70 Virginis also has a confirmed planet.

Even the stars themselves can be interesting. Some stars, like SS Virginis, change their brightness over a year. Virgo is truly a rich part of our universe to explore.
