Aquarius is a large group of stars in the night sky.

It sits on the zodiac, which is the path the Sun seems to follow. Its name comes from a Latin word meaning "water-carrier" or "cup-carrier." You can recognize it by its symbol, which looks like waves of water.

Aquarius is found in a part of the sky called the Sea. This area has many other watery groups, like the fish and the whale. It is one of the oldest groups recognized by people.

Many different cultures saw different things in these stars. In ancient Babylon, the stars represented a god named Ea. He was shown holding an overflowing vase. In Egypt, people linked the stars to the yearly flooding of the Nile River. The Greeks had many stories about this group. Some said it was a boy named Ganymede who carried cups for the gods. Others thought it was a king named Cecrops I.

In China, the stars were seen very differently. Many people saw a group called the Army of Yu-Lin. This name means "feathers and forests." These stars represented light-footed soldiers from the north. This group had 45 stars, which was more than any other Chinese constellation. They also saw a water jar and even a tomb. Some stars even looked like a castle with walls.

The stars in Aquarius are not very bright. The brightest star is named Sadalsuud, or Beta Aquarii. It is a huge yellow star. It is 50 times wider than our Sun.

Another bright star is called Sadalmelik. It is also a giant star. Most of the stars in this group are not easy to see with just your eyes. They form a Y-shape that some call the "Steering Wheel."

Scientists have found many planets around these stars. These are called exoplanets. One star is named Gliese 876. It is only 15 light-years away from Earth. It has four planets orbiting it. One of those planets is a rocky world, much like our own Earth. Another star, 91 Aquarii, has a planet that is much heavier than Jupiter. Finding these worlds helps us learn more about space.
