Long ago, a great empire rose in West Asia.

A Greek general named Seleucus I Nicator started it. He founded the empire in 312 BC. This happened after the lands of Alexander the Great were split up.

Seleucus took control of Babylonia. He then grew his lands much larger. His empire reached parts of modern Iraq, Iran, and Syria. It even reached Afghanistan.

At its peak, the empire was a center for Greek culture. Greek language and customs were very important. Most leaders were part of a Greek elite group. Seleucus also made a deal with an Indian ruler. This ruler was named Chandragupta Maurya.

They made a peace treaty. They even shared gifts to stay friends.

Over time, the empire began to shrink. Some parts became independent. For example, the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom broke away. Other groups like the Parthians took more land. Later, the Roman Republic took over. This happened in 63 BC under a leader named Pompey. The empire was gone, but its history remains.
