While many ancient songs exist, they are usually just broken fragments. This song is unique because the whole piece is still there. It includes both the words of the poem and the musical notation. This notation tells us exactly how the melody should sound. It is a beautiful link to how people made music long ago.

Reading the song is like solving a wonderful puzzle. The stone features a short poem called an elegiac distich at the top. Below that, the song lyrics are written in ancient Greek.

Small signs called stigmai are carved above the words. Experts are not entirely sure what these dots mean. Some believe they show an upbeat or a rhythmic emphasis. Others think they might show how loud or soft to play. These tiny marks help us try to feel the original beat.

The story of this stone began in the town of Tralles. This place is known today as Aydın in Turkey.

An Irish engineer named Edward Purser found the pillar in 1883. He was working during the construction of the Ottoman Railway. Sadly, the base of the pillar was damaged during this time. Purser actually sawed the bottom flat to use it as a stand for flowerpots. This accident destroyed one line of the original text. We only know that line because of an earlier rubbing made of the stone.

Historians have worked hard to figure out when the song was made. Most experts believe it comes from the first or second century AD. They look at the shapes of the letters to find the date. For example, the way the letter omega is shaped helps them decide. The stone has traveled a long way through history. It was once kept in a private collection in Buca. Later, it was moved through Istanbul and Stockholm to reach The Hague. In 1967, it finally arrived at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.

People still wonder about the meaning behind the words. The inscription is likely an epitaph, which is a message on a tombstone. A man named Seikilos probably created it. He may have dedicated it to a woman named Euterpe. Some think she was his wife, but others think he named her after a Greek Muse. The song itself has a very kind and wise message. It tells listeners to shine and not be sad because life is short. It reminds us to enjoy our time while we are alive.
