These pets come in a kit. You start by adding a packet to water. This packet has salt and eggs. After one day, you add more eggs and food. Soon, the eggs hatch. They turn into nauplius larvae. These are the young forms of the shrimp. The whole life cycle takes 8 to 10 weeks.

Brine shrimp can go into cryptobiosis. This is a state of apparent lifelessness. It lets them survive even when their water dries up. The eggs can stay dormant for years. They only wake up when they touch water.

Scientists use these shrimp to study biology. They study how things grow and how genes work. These shrimp even went to space! Astronaut John Glenn took them on a shuttle in 1998. They hatched well after their trip. However, eggs sent to the Moon had a hard time. Cosmic rays can cause changes in how they grow. Some eggs did not survive to become adults.
