Brine shrimp are tiny animals that live in salty water.

They often live in lakes with a lot of salt. Most fish cannot live in such salty places. This helps the shrimp stay safe from predators.

These shrimp have a special way to survive. They make tough eggs called cysts. These eggs can stay still for a long time. They can even stay dry or frozen. This state is called cryptobiosis, which means "hidden life."

When you put the eggs in salty water, they hatch. The babies are called nauplii.

Many people use brine shrimp to help fish grow. Farmers use the eggs as food for young fish. Most of these eggs come from the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

Scientists also study them in labs. They use the shrimp to test if chemicals are harmful. Some people even send the eggs into space! Scientists sent them on Apollo missions to the Moon. They wanted to see how space rays affect life.
