Scolopendridae is a family of large centipedes. The name comes from Greek words. One word means thorn. The other word means earthworm.

Most of these centipedes have 21 pairs of legs. Some have more. One type has 39 or 43 pairs of legs. Most also have simple eyes called ocelli. They have four ocelli on each side of the head. But some types are eyeless. These centipedes are blind.

Some of these bugs are very special. Three types from Asia can live in water. They can also live on land. This is called amphibious behavior. Other types have different venom. Venom is the liquid they use to hunt. In two types, the venom is different for males and females.

These bugs have been around for a long time. Scientists found a fossil of an extinct type. It lived in Brazil. This was during the Early Cretaceous period. It was called Cratoraricrus.
