Sciatica is a name for pain that travels down a leg. It often starts in the lower back. This pain can go down the back, the side, or the front of the leg.

Many people say the pain feels like a shooting shock. It usually happens on only one side of the body. Some people might also feel weakness or numbness in their foot. This can be a very hard job for a person to deal with.

Most of the time, this happens because of a spinal disc herniation. Your spine has discs between the bones to keep things stable. These discs have a tough outer ring called the anulus fibrosus. Inside is a soft, jelly-like center called the nucleus pulposus.

As people get older, the outer ring can weaken and tear. When it tears, the soft center can squeeze out. This part then presses on the nerve roots. This pressure is what causes the shooting pain.

There are other ways the nerve can get pinched. One way is called spinal stenosis. This is when the space for the spinal cord becomes too narrow. This often happens to people over the age of 50. Another way involves the piriformis muscle in the hip. If this muscle spasms or gets injured, it can press on the nerve. Some people call this "wallet sciatica" if a wallet in a back pocket causes the pressure.

People have known about this since ancient times. A person named Dioscorides wrote about it in the 1st century CE. He included it in his book called Materia Medica. The first modern use of the word "sciatica" was in 1451. Today, we know it affects many people. Some say between 1% and 40% of people will have it. It is most common in men between the ages of 40 and 59.

Doctors use a straight-leg-raising test to help find the cause. A person lies on their back while a doctor lifts their leg. If pain shoots below the knee, the test is positive. Most people do not need special pictures like an MRI right away. In about 90% of cases, the pain goes away in less than six weeks. Usually, the best way to heal is simply to give the body time. People are often told to keep doing normal activities as best they can.
