Sciatica is a type of pain. It starts in the lower back. The pain travels down the leg.

Many people feel a shooting pain. It can feel like a shock. The pain may go down the front or side of the leg. It can even reach the foot. Some people also feel weakness or numbness. This often happens on only one side of the body.

Most sciatica comes from a spinal disc herniation.

A disc is a part between the bones in your spine. It has a soft center and a tough outer ring. Sometimes the soft center leaks through a tear in the ring. This can press on a nerve. This pressure causes the pain.

Other things can cause this pain too. A narrow spinal canal can pinch nerves. This is called spinal stenosis. Muscles in the hip can also press on the nerve. This is called piriformis syndrome.

Doctors use a straight-leg-raising test to help. They check if pain shoots below the knee when the leg is lifted. Most people feel better in six weeks. They just need time to heal.
