Low back pain

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Low back pain is a common problem for many people. It happens in the area between the lower ribs and the buttocks. This part of the body includes bones called vertebrae and muscles that hold you up.

The pain can feel like a dull ache that stays the same. It can also feel like a sudden, sharp sting. Doctors group pain by how long it lasts. Pain that stays for less than six weeks is called acute pain. If it lasts six to 12 weeks, it is sub-chronic. Pain that lasts more than 12 weeks is called chronic pain.

Your back stays strong because of a special way it works. Between your vertebrae are soft cushions called intervertebral discs. These discs have a jelly-like center and a tough outer ring. They act like pillows to stop your bones from rubbing together.

Nerves run through small openings between these bones to send messages. When a disc gets damaged, it is called a herniated disc. This can happen if the disc material pushes on a nerve. This might cause a feeling called sciatica, which travels down your legs. Sometimes, muscles like the multifidus do not work right during recovery. This can make the pain come back later.

Scientists and doctors have studied how we feel pain for a long time. Pain is not just a feeling; it is a signal from the body. The process of feeling pain has four main steps. First, there is transduction, where nerve cells turn an event into an electrical signal. Next is transmission, when the signal travels through the spinal cord to the brain. Then comes perception, where the brain figures out what the signal means. Finally, there is modulation, where the brain can change the strength of the signal.

In chronic pain, these steps might not work the way they should.

Many facts show how widespread this issue is. About 40% of people will have low back pain at some point. In developed countries, that number can be as high as 80%. Right now, about 632 million people are dealing with it. This is about 9% to 12% of the world's population. Most people first feel this pain between the ages of 20 and 40. Women and older people often have higher rates of pain or disability. The World Health Organization said in 2023 that this is a top medical condition. Many people can benefit from better rehabilitation programs.

Most people find relief using simple ways to help the body. Doctors often suggest non-medication treatments first. These include using heat, getting a massage, or trying acupuncture. It is also important to keep doing normal activities as much as you can. If those do not work, doctors might suggest medicines called NSAIDs. For some, surgery might help if a disc is causing big problems. However, surgery does not always help with other types of pain. Understanding how your back works helps you take better care of it.
