The Schengen Area is a unique system of open borders in Europe. It consists of many countries that have officially abolished border controls at their shared borders.

This system is a key part of the European Union's policy regarding freedom, security, and justice. It functions mostly as a single jurisdiction under a common visa policy for international travelers. This means that once a person enters the area, they can move between many different countries without stopping for passport checks at every boundary.

The mechanism of the Schengen Area relies on two main pillars: open internal borders and strict external borders. Within the zone, countries remove the physical checkpoints that usually separate nations. To compensate for this, the member states strengthen their control over the outer edges of the area.

They also use a common visa policy to manage who enters from the outside. This policy allows certain nationals to enter via air, land, or sea for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

This unified approach helps maintain security while allowing for easy movement.

The area includes many different types of nations and political entities. Most members are part of the European Union, but four non-EU members also participate: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

These four countries have signed association agreements to join the system. Additionally, several microstates are part of the area in a "de facto" or practical sense. Monaco is considered part of the area because France administers its border controls. Andorra, San Marino, and Vatican City also maintain open borders due to their small size.

The history of this system began with a desire for closer European cooperation. Before World War I, many borders were quite relaxed. However, the period between the two World Wars saw the rise of strict border controls and visas. After World War II, countries began forming customs unions to work together economically. In 1985, five members of the European Economic Community signed the Schengen Agreement in the village of Schengen, Luxembourg.

This was followed by the 1990 Schengen Convention, which established the common visa policy. By 1995, the Schengen Area was officially created, and it was later fully integrated into European Union law.

The impact of the Schengen Area is massive in terms of both people and economics. The area covers a vast territory and has a population exceeding 450 million people. Every day, approximately 1.7 million people cross an internal border to commute to work. In some specific regions, these international commuters make up as much as one-third of the entire workforce. The movement of goods is also enormous. In 2015, there were 1.3 billion total border crossings. Of those, 57 million crossings involved the transport of goods by road, with a total value of €2.8 trillion.

This system even reduces trade costs by between 0.42% and 1.59%.

Joining the Schengen Area is a complex process that requires meeting strict criteria. The European Commission must evaluate a country's border legislation, infrastructure, and police cooperation. A country must also prove it has strong personal data protection and effective visa systems. Romania and Bulgaria are the most recent members to join. They saw their air and sea border controls lifted on March 31, 2024. Their land border controls were scheduled to lift on January 1, 2025.

Other countries, like Cyprus, aim to join by 2026, but they must first resolve local disputes and assess their preparedness.

Some nations choose to remain outside the system to protect specific interests. Ireland maintains an "opt-out" to keep its Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom. This allows for passport-free travel and free movement between those two specific places. Even though Ireland is not in Schengen, it does participate in some parts of the system, such as the Schengen Information System, to benefit from security cooperation. The system shows how different nations can balance their own unique laws with the benefits of a massive, shared European space.
