The Schengen Area is a group of European countries.

These lands have no border checks between them. This makes moving from one country to another very easy. It is named after a small place in Luxembourg. In 1985, leaders signed an agreement there. They wanted to stop checking people at common borders.

Many countries belong to this group. Most are in the European Union. But some are not. Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also members. Even tiny places like Monaco and Vatican City have open borders.

This system helps people in many ways. About 1.7 million people cross borders to work every day.

It also helps with trade. In 2015, there were 1.3 billion border crossings. Many of these were trucks carrying goods. This makes buying and selling things cheaper. Some countries are still working to join. Cyprus wants to join by 2026. Romania and Bulgaria are the newest members. They joined the group recently in 2024 and 2025.
