Ancient people used obsidian blades. They used them for surgery a long time ago.

Most medical scalpels have two parts. There is a handle and a blade.

Many handles can be used again. You just put a new blade on them. This is common in hospitals. Most doctors use a new blade for every cut. This keeps everything clean.

There are different ways to hold a scalpel. The pencil grip is for tiny, exact cuts. The palmar grip is for larger cuts.

Safety is very important. Doctors can get cut by accident. To help, some scalpels have safety parts. Some blades can slide back into the handle. This protects the hands of the doctors.
