It has a very sharp edge. It works like a small razor blade. People used these tools to cut or scrape things. They also turned them into points for arrows.

Most of these blades come from Mesoamerica. Many were made from obsidian. Obsidian is a dark, glassy stone. People also used chert or flint. To make a blade, a maker hits a stone core. They might use pressure to shape it. This is called pressure flaking. This way makes many tools look the same.

Making tools leaves behind stone scraps. We call this waste. These scraps show how tools were made. Sometimes people traded whole blades. Other times they traded small parts. These parts include the top or the middle. They also traded the end parts. Even broken bits were useful. People turned old scraps into new tools. They made scrapers or small points from them. This helped them use every bit of the stone.
