A microlith is a very small stone tool.

Most are made from flint or chert. They are only a few centimeters long. People made them in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Humans used these stones to make weapons. They attached them to wood or bone. They used resin, which is a sticky substance, to hold them. A spear might use six to eighteen microliths. An arrow might only use one or two. This was very helpful. If a tip broke, a person could just swap it. It was easier than making a new handle.

There are two main types of microliths. The first type is called laminar. These are slightly larger. The second type is called geometric. These have shapes like triangles or half-moons.

To make geometric tools, people used a special way called the microburin technique. This method leaves behind a piece of waste called a microburin. Even though these stones are small, they tell us a lot. Scientists use them to study how old a site is.
