Computers need a way to talk to storage parts.

These parts save your files and photos. SATA is a special way to connect them. It connects a computer to hard drives and SSDs. An SSD is a fast way to store data.

SATA replaced an older system called PATA. SATA uses much smaller cables. These cables use only seven wires. The old PATA cables used 40 or 80 wires. Because the cables are small, they are cheaper. SATA also moves data much faster.

You can use a feature called hot plugging. This means you can plug in a drive while the power is on. This makes it easy to swap parts.

SATA has grown much faster over time. The first version was very slow. Later versions became much faster. One version can move 6 Gbit/s of data. This is a way to measure speed.

Each new version works with the old ones. This is called backward compatibility. It means new parts still work with old systems.
