SATA is a special connection for computers.

It acts like a bridge between a computer and its storage devices. These devices include hard disk drives and solid-state drives. It also connects optical drives to the computer. This interface is very important for keeping your files safe.

Without a way to talk to storage, a computer could not save anything. SATA helps all these parts work together smoothly.

SATA works by sending data through a high-speed serial cable.

This cable uses two pairs of conductors to move information. This is different from the older PATA system. PATA used a wide data bus with many more signals. SATA is much more efficient because it uses fewer wires. It only needs seven conductors to do its job.

This makes the cables smaller and cheaper to make.

Engineers created SATA to improve upon the older PATA standard. The name PATA stands for Parallel AT Attachment. The "AT" part comes from the IBM Personal Computer AT released in 1984. SATA was first announced in the year 2000.

Companies like Seagate, APT, and Vitesse showed the first SATA disc drive. The first real SATA hard drive was the Seagate Barracuda SATA V. It was released in January 2003. By 2008, SATA held 99% of the desktop computer market.

There are different versions of SATA that get faster over time.

The first version, SATA 1.0, could move 1.5 Gbit/s of data. This version was released in early 2003. Later, SATA 2.0 arrived in April 2004 with a speed of 3 Gbit/s. This version added a helpful feature called Native Command Queuing.

The third version, SATA 3.0, was released in May 2009. It can move data at 6 Gbit/s. These new versions are backward compatible with the old ones.

SATA also allows for a very handy feature called hot plugging.

This means you can plug a device in while the power is on. You can even remove a device without turning the computer off. This makes it easy to swap parts quickly. Some newer versions like SATA Express combine different types of connections.

You might even see very tiny versions like mSATA in mobile devices. SATA makes sure our digital world stays fast and connected.
