Computers need ways to talk to storage parts.

For a long time, many used Parallel ATA. We call this PATA for short.

Western Digital and Compaq helped make it in 1986. It was used for hard drives and CD drives.

PATA is a way to send data through a cable. It was also called IDE. This name meant the drive had its own controller. A controller is a part that manages how the drive works. This helped the rest of the computer by doing the hard work.

Later, a new way called ATAPI was added.

ATAPI lets the PATA cables work with other tools. It helps the computer use things like DVD drives. It does this by sending small packets of data.

PATA cables have a limit on how long they can be. Because of this, they are usually inside the computer. PATA was very common because it was cheap. Now, a newer tool called SATA has mostly replaced it.
