Sasuke is a famous Japanese sports entertainment show.

It began airing in 1997 on the Tokyo Broadcasting System. One hundred competitors try to finish a very difficult four-stage obstacle course. To win, a person must reach the very end and hit a buzzer. If they hit the buzzer, they get an advantage for the next stage. However, if they fall or run out of time, they are eliminated.

The show is very popular and has many versions in other countries. Most of these international shows are called Ninja Warrior. There are about 20 local versions of the show around the world.

Watching the course requires great speed, strength, and balance.

The obstacles are designed to test many different skills. Some parts of the course focus on urban navigation and balance. Competitors might hop over barrels or run across rooftops. Other stages focus on speed to help them evade capture. These parts might include crawling under raised temples or passing heavy barricades. Some stages test precision skills. Athletes must run across fenceposts, hanging beams, or bamboo trusses. The final stage often involves climbing a tall tower.

An employee named Ushio Higuchi started the idea for this competition.

He worked at TBS and had produced live sports like the Olympics. Higuchi wanted to find the best all-around athlete in the world. He first pitched an idea called The King of Sports. At first, TBS said no because it was hard to find athletes. Higuchi worked for a long time to find 28 athletes from different sports. These included people from baseball, wrestling, boxing, golf, and motorsports. This led to a show called Pro Sportsman No. 1 in 1993.

After that, a new program called Kinniku Banzuke began in 1995.

This show allowed regular people to compete through auditions. It became a huge hit with many viewers. Higuchi then created new obstacle ideas like the Hand Walk. He also made the Spider Walk, which is based on how ninjas move between walls. Eventually, the show became Sasuke in 1997. The name comes from Sarutobi Sasuke, a fictional ninja from Japanese stories. The show is recorded at Midoriyama studios in Yokohama.

Sasuke is a lot like the video games many people play.

The course is designed to look like a game, such as Super Mario Bros. The stages move in a straight line just like a player moving through levels. The show also uses themes from movies like Castle in the Sky. Because the show is so big, it can last for a long time. One single episode can be 70 minutes or even 6 hours long. There have been about 43 special episodes produced since it began.
