It lived a very long time ago during the Early Cretaceous period. This was between 130 and 112 million years ago. These animals lived in parts of Africa and South America. They mostly stayed in freshwater places like rivers.

The name Sarcosuchus comes from ancient Greek words. One part means "flesh" and the other refers to a god named Sobek. It was a very large animal that belonged to a group of reptiles. Scientists call this group crocodyliforms.

This animal had a very interesting body.

Its snout was very long and made up 75% of its skull. The upper jaw was longer than the lower jaw. This created an overbite when the mouth was shut. There were 35 teeth on each side of the upper jaw. The lower jaw had 31 teeth on each side.

Young Sarcosuchus had narrow snouts like a modern gharial. However, the snouts became much wider as they grew up. They also had hard plates on their skin called osteoderms. These bony plates covered them from the neck to the middle of the tail.

People have been finding fossils of this animal for a long time.

French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent led expeditions in the Sahara from 1946 to 1959. These trips found skull fragments, teeth, and vertebrae. In 1964, a team found an almost complete skull in Niger. Later, an American scientist named Paul Sereno led new trips. He found many more fossils in 1997 and 2000. These new finds helped scientists understand the whole skeleton much better.

Scientists use math to guess how big Sarcosuchus was.

They look at the length of the skull to guess the body length. One famous type is Sarcosuchus imperator. Some estimates say it could reach 11 or 12 meters long. It might have weighed as much as 8,000 kilograms.

Another type is called Sarcosuchus hartti. Fossils for this species were found in Brazil. These fossils were first seen by a naturalist named Charles Hartt in 1867. He sent teeth to a scientist named O. C. Marsh.

Sarcosuchus was a generalist predator.

This means it ate many different kinds of food. It lived in a warm, tropical world with many other animals. It ate fish like the Mawsonia that lived in the water. It also ate herbivorous dinosaurs like Nigersaurus and Ouranosaurus. Scientists found evidence that fish made up 58% of its diet. It was a very successful hunter in its river home. It shared the water with many different creatures.
