Kaprosuchus

Imagine a creature that looks like a mix between a crocodile and a wild boar. This animal is called Kaprosuchus. It belonged to a group of animals called mahajangasuchids. Scientists call it the "boar crocodile" because of its huge teeth. These teeth look just like the tusks of a boar.

This animal lived a long time ago during the Upper Cretaceous period. It is a very special find for scientists studying history. Even though it looks like a modern crocodile, it was quite different.

Kaprosuchus had a very unique way of working. It had three sets of tusk-like teeth. These teeth stick out from both the top and bottom of the skull. One set of teeth in the lower jaw fits into notches in the upper jaw.

The animal also had large horns on its head. These horns grew from the bones of the skull. The tip of its snout might have had a shield made of keratin. This is the same tough material that makes up a bird's beak.

This shield likely protected the animal's face.

Scientists first described this animal in the year 2009. Two researchers named Paul Sereno and Hans Larsson wrote about it. They published their work in a journal called ZooKeys.

They gave it the nickname "BoarCroc." They studied it alongside other animals from the Sahara, like Anatosuchus and Laganosuchus. This helped them understand how different crocodile-like animals lived together.

We know a lot about Kaprosuchus from one nearly complete skull. The skull is about 507 mm long. The lower jaw is even longer at 603 mm.

Scientists estimate the whole body was about 6 meters long. It was found in the Echkar Formation in Niger. This location tells us exactly where this animal once lived. The bones show that the skull was very deep at the back.

This helped make the jaw very strong.

How did this animal hunt for food? For a long time, people thought it lived mostly on land. Its eyes faced forward, which gave it stereoscopic vision. This means its eyes saw the same area to help it see depth.

However, some scientists now think it was semiaquatic. This means it lived in both water and on land. They think this because its relatives lived in the water. It may have been a master of both worlds.
