People who follow Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all look to her as a holy figure. She is often described as a woman of great beauty and kindness. Many stories say she was famous for being a good host to guests. She was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. Because of her role in these faiths, she is called a matriarch. This means she is a foundational mother figure for many people.

Her life involved many long journeys across ancient lands.

Originally, her name was Sarai. She traveled with Abraham, her nephew Lot, and her father Terah. They left a place called Ur to go to a land called Canaan. During a time of famine, they also traveled to Egypt. While in Egypt, a king named Pharaoh took her into his palace. Abraham had asked her to say she was his sister to keep him safe. Eventually, God sent plagues to the palace, and Pharaoh sent her back to Abraham.

Sarah's story includes a very special promise about her family.

For a long time, Sarah and Abraham did not have any children. Sarah even had a helper named Hagar, who had a son named Ishmael. Later, God changed Sarai's name to Sarah. This change happened during a special agreement called a covenant. God promised that Sarah would have a son despite her old age. When she heard this news, Sarah laughed to herself. Not long after, she gave birth to a son named Isaac.
