Hagar is a woman from many ancient stories. In the Book of Genesis, she was an Egyptian servant for a woman named Sarai.

Sarai and her husband Abram were very old. They wanted to have a child to fulfill a promise from God. Because Sarai could not have a child, she gave Hagar to Abram to be his wife. Hagar soon became pregnant with a son named Ishmael. This caused a lot of tension between the two women.

The story describes how life became very hard for Hagar. After Ishmael was born, Sarah also had a son named Isaac. This led to more trouble between the families. Sarah wanted Ishmael to stay away from Isaac's inheritance. Abraham felt very sad, but he sent Hagar and Ishmael away into the desert. They wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba until their water ran out. Hagar was very upset and cried for her son.

Many traditions tell different parts of her history. In the Quran, she is called Hajar and is a respected figure.

Muslims believe she was a wife of Abraham. The Quranic story says she ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah looking for water. An angel helped her find the sacred Zamzam Well. This well provided water for her and Ishmael. Later, a tribe called the Banu Jurhum settled near them because of the water.

Jewish scholars have many different ideas about who Hagar was. Some say she was actually a daughter of the Pharaoh from Egypt.

Other commentators wonder if Hagar was the same person as Keturah. Keturah was a woman Abraham married after Sarah died. Some stories say Hagar was very godly and was not afraid of angels. Other stories focus on the arguments between her and Sarah. These different views show how important her story is to different people.

Hagar's life connects to many big ideas in history. Many people believe Ishmael was the ancestor of the Arab people. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul used her story to talk about different ways of living. Some thinkers use her to represent the idea of an earthly city. Her story is still used today to show how people can survive hard times. Even in the desert, she found a way to live and build a future.
