The Sapsan is a major part of how people travel between big cities. It helps connect people to places like Moscow and Saint Petersburg in a short time.

This train works using electricity to reach high speeds.

There are two main types of these trains called EVS1 and EVS2. The EVS1 trains use one kind of power called 3 kV DC. The EVS2 trains are dual-system, meaning they can use two different types of power. They can use 3 kV DC or 25 kV AC power. Some EVS2 trains even have retractable steps. These steps move out to help passengers board low platforms.

Siemens and Russian Railways started working on this project a long time ago.

On May 18, 2006, they signed an order for eight trains. This order cost 276 million euros. They also signed a 30-year service contract worth about 300 million euros. Later, in December 2011, they signed another big order. This one was for 600 million euros to get twenty more trainsets. These new trains help more people travel on the existing tracks.

These trains have set many records for speed in Russia.

On May 2, 2009, a Sapsan traveled at 250 km/h. Just a few days later, it reached 254 km/h. The regular service between Moscow and Saint Petersburg began in December 2009. Most trips between these two cities take about four hours. Some of the fastest trains do not stop at any stations in between. This helps the train keep its high speed for the whole journey.

Traveling on the Sapsan is a modern way to see the country. The trains run on a wide track that is common in Russia. You might see different types of cars inside the train. Some cars have first class seats or a VIP section. Other cars have a bistro where you can eat. There is even a section with a baby cradle for families. This makes the long trip comfortable for all kinds of travelers.
