The Sapsan travels between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The trip can take about four hours. Some trains do not stop at any stations in between. This helps them go faster. The trains can reach speeds of 250 km/h.

There are two types of Sapsan trains. The EVS1 trains use one kind of power. The EVS2 trains are dual-system. This means they can use two different kinds of electric power. This helps them run on different tracks. Some EVS2 trains even have steps that move out. These steps help people get on low platforms.

In 2006, a large order was signed for eight trains. Later, a new order for twenty more trains was made. These new trains help more people travel across the country.
