Intercity Express

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Intercity Express, or ICE, is a high-speed rail system in Germany.

It is the flagship service for the German state railway, Deutsche Bahn. These trains are built for comfort and long trips. They are often used by business travelers instead of flying on planes. While they mostly run in Germany, they also travel to Austria, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

The ICE helps connect many different countries across Europe.

Different trains use different ways to move. The older ICE 1 and ICE 2 models use power cars to pull the train. The ICE 2 was designed to be flexible. It uses smaller units that can be coupled or detached as needed.

The newer ICE 3 works in a different way. Instead of separate power cars, it uses electric multiple units. This means the motors are located under the floor throughout the train. This design helps the train fit on many different types of tracks.

Some special models, like the ICE T, use tilting technology. This allows them to stay fast even on curvy, older tracks.

Testing these fast trains took many years. In 1985, the Deutsche Bundesbahn started trials with a test train called the InterCityExperimental.

This train set a world speed record on May 1, 1988. It reached a speed of 406.9 km/h. The test train was retired in 1996. After that, the first real batch of 41 ICE 1 units began to arrive. The official ICE network finally opened on May 29, 1991.

Many trains met at the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station to celebrate this start.

There are many specific models of ICE trains. The ICE 1 began service in 1989. The ICE 2 followed in 1997 and can reach 280 km/h.

The ICE 3 can go much faster, reaching up to 330 km/h. Some ICE 3 trains are part of the Siemens Velaro family. These have been sent to places like Spain, China, and Russia.

The newest ICE 4 was rebranded in 2015. The ICE 3neo is also a very new model. It is designed to operate at 320 km/h.

You can think of the ICE as a fast bridge between cities. Just as a road carries cars from one town to another, these trains carry people across borders. They make long distances feel much shorter. Some of these train designs are even used in other countries. For example, the Siemens Velaro design is used by Renfe in Spain.

This shows how one great idea can travel all around the world. The ICE is a major part of how people move in Europe today.
